THE COPTS NOT AN INSIGNIFICANT MINORITY BY ANY MEANS الأقباط ليسوا اقلية قليلة باي حال من الأحوال

April 17, 2011

The World, political

The Copts have been described as a religious, cultural or national minority by different researchers and politicians. Being described as minority, some may think they constitute an insignificant group. The Egyptian government, which is dominated by Muslims, has traditionally tended to give very low population estimates for the Copts (around 6% of the total population of Egypt) in order to facilitate their marginalisation and to justify excluding them, or to lower their share in the important positions of the State, political representation and the taxpayers’ money.

More trusted reports give the population of the Copts as anything between 10 and 20 million out of a total Egyptian population of around 80,000,000 (Egypt’s rank in world population is 15). This makes the percentage of the Coptic population in Egypt ranging between 13% (1/8) and 25% (1/4) of the total Egyptian population. Taking the lower figure, to satisfy the cynics, into account, the proportion of the Coptic population is still sizable, and cannot be described as insignificant or trivial, particularly if one takes other factors into account, such as the Copts’ wealth, education, influence, roots and history.

The Coptic population is significant not just in comparison with the Egyptian overall population – it is also substantial when ranked with known nations of the world. Looking at Wikipedia’s table below,[i] one can find that Coptia, or the Coptic nation,[ii] ranks as no. 85 out of the 225[iii] nations, and constitutes 0.14% of the total world population. The position of the Coptic nation, among other nations, stands as the 37th on a scale of 1 to 100.

In population size, and taking the conservative figure of 10 million, it is bigger than the population of such nations as Belarus, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Israel, Bulgaria, Serbia, Denmark, Slovakia, Finland, Norway, Ireland, Georgia, Croatia, New Zealand, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Armenia, Lithuania, Albania, Latvia, Republic of Macedonia, Slovenia, Estonia, Cyprus, Luxemburg, Malta, Iceland, Greenland, Liechtenstein, Monaco and Vatican City.

No, the Coptic nation is a sizable one, and must not, it cannot, be ignored.[iv]

[i] This is a list of countries by population as given by Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population). The list includes 224 independent countries and inhabited dependent territories. Also given, as a percentage, is each country’s population compared to the population of the world, which is currently about 6,912,600,000.

[iii] Wikipedia gives of course 224 countries – adding Coptia makes the figure 225.

[iv] Other measures to gauge the comparative size of the Copts is their relevant size compared with the Christians of the Middle East as a whole – Copts constitute at least 80% of all Middle East Christians. For this, and estimation of Coptic population, see Copts in Egypt: a Christian minority under siege; ed. Martyn Thomas, Adly A. Youssef; G2W-Verlag; Zurich; 2006. See also, The Coptic Minority in Egypt by Edward M. Wakin; 1962. Also see, the Copts of Egypt, Saad Eddin Ibrahim, Minority Rights Group; 1996. The CIA: The World Factbook: Egypt gives the percentage of the Copts as 9%.
