THE COPTIC NATIONALISTS AND THE NATIONALIST QUESTION IN EGYPT

November 17, 2013

We hold these convictions strongly:

(1)     Egypt is a multinational state and special arrangements must be made for that.

(2)    The constitution must state that Egypt is a multinational state based on equality of all its nations

(3)     The Copts are a cultural nation of its own and this must be recognised by the state.

(4)     Egypt is made up of Arab, Copt & Nuba nations: they all unite in patriotic, geographical nationalism represented in Egypt.

(5)     Egypt must not be described in the constitution as Arab, Muslim state. This is divisive & exclusive: it automatically excludes the Copts from being equal citizens of the state.

(6)    There must be no return to the old: a new, brave Egypt must be built. The old will only lead to secession sooner or later.

(7)    The Copts must be allowed to freely develop their own identity, culture and language.

(8)    The rights of the Copts are not just rights of the individual but collective rights too.

(9)    The Copts must have a large degree of non-territorial autonomy within the Egyptian state.

(10) This is the way of Coptic nationalism.

The first draft of the Egyptian constitution is said to be published on Tuesday 19 November 2013 by the Committee of Fifty. We hope it pays attention to this.

It should be up to us Copts to revive our culture and identity independently regardless of the situation in Egypt, it is a Christian duty.
