COPTIC LADY LYING ON GROUND, CAIRO, 1949, BY THE ARMENIAN PHOTOGRAPHER VAN LEO

Van Leo[1] (1921 – 2002) was a prominent Armenian photographer in Egypt who was famous for self-portraits that included many Egyptian and foreigners, many of them famous such as Omar El Sherif . In Egypt, photography was mainly a specialty of Armenians who fled the genocide by the Turks. He came to Egypt in 1925 as a little child with his family that fled the persecution. The work of Leo was highly regarded and has international fame. In 1998 he bequeathed his entire collection of work to the American University of Cairo (AUC).

One of his glamorous and theatrical works that has a Hollywood style to it, which characterised his work, is that of a Coptic woman, which he executed in 1949, and titled, “Coptic Lady”. We don’t know who the beautiful Coptic woman is. The portrait is signed by the photographer and dated in its right bottom corner. Here it is:
