I CALL FOR A COPTIC ECCLESIASTICAL CANON TO MAKE IT MANDATORY THAT ALL COPTIC CLERGY BE PROFICIENT IN COPTIC LANGUAGE

October 8, 2017

In a previous article, ‘The Coptic church must declare its will to protect and promote the Coptic language’, I wrote:

“There are many, many ways in which the Coptic Church can help in that [revival of Coptic language]; but before we can discuss this in more detail, we must all agree that the Coptic Church, first, must announce that part of its function or duty is to reverse the language shift of our nation – that our Coptic language is sacred; that it helps to strengthen our identity, religion, and culture.”

One of the steps for this to happen is through a Church canon that would make it mandatory upon Coptic clergy to learn Coptic and to be proficient in it. Not all Coptic clergy know Coptic. The ecclesiastical canon should make it obligatory that:

  1. No new clergy should be ordained before they are passed as being competent in reading, writing and speaking Coptic.
  2. All old clergy (those who have already been ordained) should study Coptic to be competent in it.

The call is to Pope Tawodoros II and to the Coptic Church Holy Synod. And one would hope that they would rise to the challenge.

Another reason that Coptic must be preserved is because of its historical/ethnic and linguistic value. The Coptic language derives directly from that of the Ancient Egyptians. Without Coptic, the Rosetta Stone could not have been translated.

Very true. It has a universal importance.
