OUR COPTNESS IS INCOMPLETE WITHOUT MASTERING COPTIC

May 20, 2019

Coptness can be defined as the state or quality of being a Copt, or the Coptic character. Coptness includes things like being a descendent of the ancient Egyptians and pride in their history, attachment to the land of eternal Egypt, Christianity, the Coptic Orthodox Faith, Coptic hymns and music, Coptic literature, Coptic language, etc. Of all these, the Coptic language is the most difficult test: we can satisfy ourselves with believing that it is our national language and may be learn a bit of it and sing and pray in it, uttering words and sentences that we don’t fully comprehend. That is all alright – it defines part of our Coldness; but to be really Copts, we must master Coptic, reading, writing and speaking the language. And this, although some have achieved, is a life-long endeavour for most of us. But without it our Coptness cannot be complete.
